DJ MK 'S WORLD TRAVELS

So I'm working on this new project called Lyrical Alliance, which is taking place at the Round House next June for over 3000 people. Im spending the next month travelling around the world, finding the best MC'S from non- English speaking countries, and bringing them back to London to do the show alongside a HUGE US headliner as well as some of the best MC'S from over here in the UK.

The first stop was Paris. I was kinda getting my Simon Cowell on!! I got the opportunity to meet and build with some of the sickest rappers from Paris. Some amazing talent out out there. So my next stop is Egypt, then Jordan, Beirut, Damascus, Amman, Palestine, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and much much more. Then there's Australia, and New Zealand....All by the end of the year too!!!

Here's some random Pix from Paris

LIL WAYNE GOIN DOWN...

Lil Wayne will be forced to plead out to a jail term in New York City on Thursday, according to sources with AllHipHop.com.

The rapper is expected to accept an 8-month bid in jail over his alleged involvement with a loaded .40-caliber pistol gun found on his tour bus in 2007 while in New York.

The 27-year-old now faces 15 years in jail for each count of criminal weapons possession and criminal possession of a loaded weapon.

“Wayne is going to plead guilty,” a source close to the case told AllHipHop.com, stressing that this was definitely going to happen. The rapper pleaded not guilty at press time and has yet to make any such public declaration. “The date is coming up and he’s going to do it tomorrow.”

Wayne is rumored to be willing to accept the deal to avoid a long term in jail over the gun. The same source said the term will begin in February of 2010 under the terms of the deal. “If he doesn’t plead, he goes to jail for a long time,” the source said.

“They told him that if he doesn’t plead tomorrow, it will go to trial and then he faces a far longer jail term,” the source continued.

A small amount of DNA may have changed the landscape of the case, according to a report by the Associated Press. There is a “minuscule” amount of the rapper’s DNA on the gun, reports say, and that has strengthened the case for the prosecution.

Another hearing is set to resume tomorrow, where the rapper will reportedly announce his next move.

AllHipHop.com was unable to obtain comment from representatives for Wayne at press time and the rapper didn’t speak to the media at a court date earlier today.

Lil’ Wayne has another trial looming in March over felony drug and weapons charges from a January 2008 police raid.

Home Grown: The Story of UK Hip Hop

Shout out to my homeboy James McNally who helped put together this exhibition. It covers the full history of UK Hip Hop, and much, much more. I contrubuted loads of photos, flyers, and mixtapes, for this project, so i interested to see it myself.

Home Grown: The Story of UK Hip Hop

15 October 2009 – March 2010

Urbis, Manchester

Free admission
https://www.yousendit.com/download/Z01QQ1ZqSEJ0NjljR0E9PQ
Tweeted about by Mark Ronson, described as “Jaw dropping” by DJ Semtex, ‘Home Grown: The Story of UK Hip-Hop’ – is a brand new exhibition at Urbis in Manchester. ‘Home Grown’ focuses on the wonderful, unpredictable story of UK hip-hop: a music and culture that came up from the streets - with a little help from some surprisingly eminent friends - to change the face of British music and style. From producing some of Britain’s most esteemed artists, to helping spawn almost every major British dance music genre of the last twenty years, it makes for a cracking story. But surprisingly it is one that has never before been told.
Co-curated by Urbis’s Andy Brydon and hip-hop writer James McNally with the assistance of Kid Acne, ‘Home Grown’ focuses on how British hip-hop became truly British, using an amazing array of multi-media artefacts to tell the story. Whisking you through nearly thirty years of history, the exhibition showcases rare and previously unseen flyers, posters, original cover art, fashion, photography and artefacts from the best private collections, paying tribute to British hip-hop’s indefatigable spirit and its unsung heroes.

But it also enables you to get lost in the sights and sounds, courtesy of rare film footage - sourced directly from the likes of Malcolm McLaren and film maker Dick Fontaine - and touch screen jukeboxes containing over 17 hours of hard to find music – including exclusive live audio from the Wild Bunch’s DJ Milo and the Sindecut’s DJ Fingers. Just as impressively, ‘Home Grown’ boasts the finest selection of British hip-hop photography ever assembled, including rare and evocative shots from the legendary Beezer (photographer of the Wild Bunch before they became Massive Attack), from the inimitable Normski and unseen work by former Hip-Hop Connection staff photographers Paul Hampartsoumian and Richard Reyes. It’s a compelling ride back through time, which not only reveals the fascinating secret history of a truly British sub culture, but its rich and constantly evolving aesthetic.

Andy Brydon commented: “British hip hop has never had the recognition and kudos it deserves. We have a wealth of talent in this country that has developed and grown in the last 30 years to become a respected musical force to be reckoned with and the artists that are consistently breaking through continue to push boundaries and take hip hop further. Many people are unaware of how British hip hop has evolved and of how influential it has been. Through this exhibition visitors will be able to trace the history of the UK scene before discovering what and who will be the next to make their mark.”

‘Home Grown’ is divided into seven sections, covering:

• Origins of UK hip-hop, looking at the existing British black music culture of soul boys and reggae sound systems in the late 1970s

• The Early Years, focusing on the emergence of UK b-boy culture, the continuation of the sound system legacy, and the UK’s first hip-hop and electro records

• The Boom Years, zooming in on the media’s adoption of hip-hop as a new cultural phenomenon, setting the stage for a first generation of major label home grown talent such as Cookie Crew, London Posse and Hijack

• Broken Beats focusing on UK hip-hop’s underground years as it became overshadowed by the emergence of club culture, hardening the UK hip-hop scene’s DIY values from within - most famously in the so-called Britcore movement

• The Renaissance, showing how the British hip-hop scene rallied around a new generation of acts – such as Roots Manuva, Blak Twang and Lewis Parker – championing their new sounds, and bringing a fresh sense of optimism to the scene

• The Home Grown, looking at the consolidation of this success in an underground network of self-sufficient labels, shops and promotions, while new stars blew up on the mainstream

• Emergent UK Hip-Hop, showcasing new hip-hop from all of the traditional elements, as well as the best of the new artists about to break through – whether they’re incorporating elements of grime, dubstep and ‘so-called wonky’, or just doing it straight, no chaser.

Pollyanna Clayton-Stamm, Head of Creative Programmes at Urbis said: “This exhibition continues the ethos that underpins all programming at Urbis, to explore a broad spectrum of popular and often timely topics, reclaiming popular culture by covering sometimes uncharted themes that are not traditionally covered by other galleries or museums.

It’s exciting to be highlighting a genre that has had such a huge impact on our culture, not just through music but also fashion, art and film; with this exhibition visitors will for the first time be able fully to understand and appreciate how and why British hip hop developed and where it goes from here.”
Contributors include Malcolm McLaren, Normski, Cookie Pryce (Cookie Crew), Paul Hampartsoumian, Mr. Dexter (The Brotherhood), Simon Harris, MC Duke, DJ Fingers and Crazy Noddy (the Sindecut), Rodney P, DMC, DJ 279, Fallacy, Tom Dixon and Nick Jones (The Language Lab), Skitz, Part 2, Greg Wilson, Jehst, Big Smoke, King Fu, Deal Real, DJ MK, Dreph, Junior Disprol, Benji Reid, Andy Cowan, Vie Marshall, Beezer, DJ Milo, Aroe (First Down), Tuf Tim Twist (Rock Steady Crew), Mikey DON (Krispy), Mike Lewis, Big Dada, Jake Green, Rising Styles (Hip Hop Festival), photographer Richard Reyes and Contact Theatre.

DJ EV - FUNK MASTER FLEX - BIG DAWG PITBULLS VOL 2

In 1996, i was working in a record shop in Soho called Handspun records, and the year before, the boss of the store, was in Long Island to stay with a friend. This friend gave the boss of the shop a mix tape of his homeboy called DJ EV titled " DJ EV LIVE FROM LONG ISLAND" This tape was dope! I'd never heard of DJ EV before, and this dude was so fast, and smooth....kinda like Stretch Armstrong meets Tony Touch, meets Roc Raida. So DJ EV started to blow up....was heavily down with the Def Squad..did about 4 SICK mix tapes one with Stretch Armstrong, and a few years later this one with Funk Master Flex from 1998.

When he was making this mix tape DJ EV was in London, and my boy DJ Semtex new him, so he bought him round to my yard, for a practise session. Now EV was kinda a big dude, but i was blown away at how tight he was on the tables. I remember he was juggling Dance to the drummers beat.....dude was murdering it...i mean totally killing it.....AND I VE GOT IT ON TAPE.

So the last i heard of DJ EV was that he got into ring tones early and made loads of dough?? Hope that's true. DJ EV SALUTE!!

SO this mix that ive uploaded is, kinda heavy still. SO MANY FORGOTTON HIP HOP GEMS. Keith Murry, Redman, MOP, OC, N.O.R.E, RAMPAGE, BUST RHYMES, all feature

PEANUT BUTTER WOLF - "45 LIVE " LTD EDITION

After catching wreck on dozens of 45-only (aka donuts) Hip-Hop sets worldwide, Peanut Butter Wolf has gotten together with the good folks at Five Day Weekend to put together this insane collection of 10 Rap 45’s packaged in a beautiful heavy-weight collector’s tin. The 20 classic Hip Hop cuts, personally hand picked by PBW and taken from such iconic labels as Enjoy, Sleeping Bag, Fresh, Cold Chillin’, Strong City and many more are guaranteed to not only put a smile on the face of any avid Old School Hip Hop fan, but also provide a great introduction to the golden era for any Rap fans of the new millennium.

“This project is such a great honor for me to be involved with. This is one of the crowning moments of my music career, seriously. As a kid growing up in San Jose , CA when all this stuff was coming out, I was hooked and half a lifetime later I still am. I can only imagine what these songs sound like to a teenager today hearing them for the first time, just as they probably wonder what it was like for someone like me to have heard them for the first time back when it was all happening. I've also always wondered what it was like to grow up in one of the five boroughs in Hip Hop's infancy in the 80s. These songs were the closest I got to knowing.”

MICHAEL JACKSON SANG BACKING VOCALS ON JAY Z'S "GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS

Apparently, Jay-Z said in the new issue of NME, that Michael Jackson sang backup vocals on “Girls, Girls, Girls.”

“He was on my song ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’, singing these background vocals and I didn’t even put his name on it.”

Though the comments over at XXL are calling bullshit, I don’t think it’s too far fetched. Jay-Z laid a verse down on MJ’s “You Rock My World” which was done around the same time as The Blueprint and the two icons also shared a stage during 2001’s Summer Jam.

I went back and listened to the song and though the background vocals sample Tom Brock’s “There’s Nothing In This World That Can Stop Me From Loving You,” it is quite possible that MJ laid some vocals on top of the sample. If it is indeed the case, this puts a whole new spin on the Blueprint classic and will forever change the way we listen to the song.

SIZE DOESNT MATTER 6TH BIRTHDAY BASH

Size Doesn’t Matter 6th Birthday and 60 years of the 7” inch Single.
Downloads and iPods are all very well, but for many musicians, your latest song just hasn't been released until it's been forced on to a small, grooved plastic disc at a pressure of more than 2,000 lb per square inch. The 45 rpm single is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary and despite repeated predictions of its demise, sales are rising once again. So with this in mind, we welcome you to a night that celebrates not only the beauty of 6 years of Size Doesn’t Matter monthly 7 inch madness but also celebrates 60 years of the 7 inch single… For this, our 6th birthday, we have a very special treat for you all….
The one, the only, Funki Dred, Jazzie B from the mighty Soul II Soul! Of course, he has been around a very long time indeed, so his 7 inch collection must be huge and seriously heavyweight...(no pressure Jazzie)
Jazzie took his first steps into the bass heavy world of the sound system when he was just 13, Jazzie and a school friend known as Daddae started a sound called Jah Rico, which played mainly reggae music. After a three year apprenticeship as Jah Rico, Jazzie and Daddae changed the vibe of the sound and began playing more soulful music and The Soul II Soul sound system was born. Like Size Doesn’t Matter, Soul II Soul wasn’t just about the big name DJs, it was about a vibe, it was about bringing people together. In the words of George Clinton “One nation under a groove”, you had people from all walks of life “Getting down just for the funk of it”. In 1986 Soul II Soul signed to Virgin and this partnership catapulted Soul II Soul into a tornado of success. The rest, as they say, is history!

DJ MK & DIZZEE RASCAL MTV/SHOWCASE BERLIN

Wow, think I've been to Germany about 9 times this year. On this occasion i was with Dizzee Rascal, for a live TV performance on MTV, and then onto a exclusive showcase for label bosses and journalists.

It was a early start (4.50 am) on route to my new favorite second home Terminal 5. Met up with big man Scope ( Dizzee's hype man) and we nearly missed our flight by 2 minutes, due to us risking a quick breakfast at Giraffe. Before we knew it we were in our hotel, and then straight to the MTV studios where we were rehearsing, then performing Bonkers. Doing live TV, especially one that goes out to over 80 million people is a buzz, but its also a lot of waiting around.

The performance went perfect then it was straight to the club to rehearse for the showcase later that night. The club had a good sound system, and before we new it, was RAM!!!

Dizzee killed it as he always does, as we went through some of the new album Tongue n Cheek. The energy was incredible and the crowd were going crazy. We bounced straight back tot the hotel, as by now it was 1am and every one had to be up at 5AM. Props to Dizzee. What people dont realise, is that this guy has been doing this solidly for the last 7 YEARS, with literally no days off. If anyones on his grind it's him. The video for Dirtee Cash ( the next single) is being shot today, so look out for the video in the forthcoming weeks.

So i think everyone agrees that the Mobo's are a complete embarrassment.

There is SO much talent out there, yet the Mobo's continually FAIL on every level, in representing a true award show that reflects what people like and buy........ it's also such a shame that we let this event get away with it year after year!

GULLYVER LAST SATURDAY NIGHT @PLASTIC PEOPLE

So last saturday night, the legendary club night GULLYVER was back, after a 3 month break for the summer. What a party! If you were not there, you missed out big time. Our guest dj from Hong Kong, DJ Beware, tore it down alongside Josey Rebelle, myself and the A-Cyde.

As a Dj, it's most definatley my favorite spot to spin at, as the sound system is so good and clear, you can pretty much get away with playing anything, as long as you drop it at the right time....and of cource it's got to be good music.

Last saturday every thing was played from Bashment to Electro, Hip Hop to Pop, and Grime to Funk....and much much more...If you like good music and good vibes, make sure you reach the next one which is Saturday 31st october. Much love to everyone who came down last saturday... Heres some pix for you.
