THE HOP @ THE END CLUB 1999 - DJ SEMTEX & DJ KOFI
In 1996 if you lived in London there were no hip hop clubs going on. DJ 279 had stoped doing his night "Flava of the Month" which was legendary, and Westwood was doing the temple but nothing regular.
The Hop took place once a month at the End club in London's West end, and it was THE spot if you wanted to hear hip hop. The idea of the club night was just to play good hip hop whether it be old or new, and the sound system in there was one of the best in Europe at that time. Myself MK,alongside Diablo, and Shortee blitz tore it down every month for nearly 4 years, and it was the sickest night.
This was a real legendary night, and was also my first residency. It was basically where i learnt alot. In 1999 i had to go to New York to do shows with Roots Manuva, so i called in my homeboy Semtex to do damage whilst i was away and the spot got blown.
Check out this live recording with DJ Kofi and Semtex from march 1999.....Both dj's tearing it down......Those were the days!!

Classic. Loving the MK vaults posts, more classic mixes please!! As it sounds like London had a distinct lack of hip hop nights then, when would you say were the glory days of hip hop in the LDN??
nice one - keep the tape rips coming!
dunno if you'll remember it but I got a Hot 97 tape from you years back with Evil Dee on one side and a Roc Raida old skool set on the other. think it was recorded around summer 94. any chance of posting (esp the Evil Dee)would be appreciated!
The Hop was the shit and made Wednesdays worthwhile. I must have gone to damn near every one of them. Heard the End is closing in '09 which is a shame.
YEAH I HEARD ABOUT THE END CLOSING...NOT GOOD....HAD MANY A CRAZY NIGHT THERE////STEP I KNOW EXACTLY THE TAPE UR TALKING ABOUT...I'LL DIG IT UP
its the one with the Buckshot freestyle and the premier of'Murder MC's yeah? its also got E Rule 'Listen Up' and some dope blends on it. I've still got the tape but it doesnt sound that good when I've recorded it to CD - if you come through with that one you're a legend!
HIPPA TO THE HOPPA N WE JUS DIDNT STOPPA THE DAYS OF BLAZIN IN CLUBS IT WAS HOT IN THUUURRRRR!!!!
Easy Nick,i dont think that London has ever had any real glory days for hip hop clubs, and as werid as that sounds,it was actually a good thing, as the few clubs that did play hip hop you cherished.
For me id say my glory days for going to hip hop clubs and djing in them were between 94-2000. Subterania in Ladbroke grove was the sickest spot,as well as the hop...dingwalls was the first hip hop spot i went to where westwood used to kill it,that was sick too.
