LONDON GRAFFITI- the 80'S EDITION

I really got into Hip Hop through graffiti. In 86 i started school and would have to take the Big Met from Wembley Park to Bush in West London. I was amazed at all the tags i used to see SET3, KIS42, SIR BEAU, CAST, INK, ROBBO, YESE ETC, i used to wonder, who are these kids? A month later i saw Style wars and then the book Subway art and all was explained. By the end of 86 i would always carry a pen with me,met other writers and started to get up.

A year later i was hanging round Kilburn Park hard and was in a crew called LA (LOOKING AHEAD) Along with DAME,REMIX,ARTIST,FAIR,AND EVIL 87. Evil wasnt evil at all, he was chubby kid who was a year younger then me, and was the best racker i'd ever met. When we went to get cans or pens he would always get the most. I remember being with him outside Kilburn park tube station and we arranged to meet up the next day. The next day when i got into school a writer called Drone from Edgware rd told me he was dead... When we used to hit up Kilburn Park, we d cross the live rail, and then hide in a little Workman's hole, then your mates would get on the tube, and hold the doors so the train couldnt leave the station...this gave you about 3 minutes to do a few dubs and get up before the train driver came out of his carriage...Evil was doin this but when the train pulled away he got dragged under......EVIL 87 RIP

After Evils death we all gave up Graff for about 2 months....Then it was back to business. More and more pieces were running daily, and writers were hitting train yards more then hitting walls.. By 88 writers like KAST,MIZE,STEAM, RATE&EVENT, FOAM,CAZBEE,SHOK ETC were painting the sickest pieces, and London had never and would never see this amount of art running on its tube network. Below is some of the pix i took from back then, we all used to share are photos so i think some of them were CASTS.

The sickest graff website you NEED to check is WWW.ROCKINGTHECITY.COM. They have photos of literally every single piece ive seen running on the tubes and you need to check it..

Graffiti is the one part of Hip Hop culture that always gets over looked,as the bigger corporations cant really exploit it as they can do with MCing...I gave up Graff in 1990 after being caught and sent to Feltham. I thought maybe i should stick to djing, which i did.

In the 90's a new generation of writers came through, and they were more hardcore than ever. By this time cameras were on more or less every platform and in most if not all yards. It was getting harder to paint but that didnt stop writers like FUME,TEACH,ELK,SUB,DIET,FIASCO, as well as the 80's writers who were still doing there thing (PRIME, SHUTO,RATE)

In the present day, trains get hit but most dont run. Shout out to TOX who has been doing his thing. Check out this mini documentary on him which was on SKY.

EXCLUSIVE DIZZEE RASCAL INTERVIEW THIS SUNDAY WITH DJ MK & SHORTEE BLITZ

Last week i caught up with my homeboy Dizzee Rascal for a exclusive interview where he's breaking down his new album, who's on it, who's not on, the different producers he's working with, and the direction of the new music. The title of the new album is called "Tongue-in-cheek" and as Diz says "It does what it says on the tin...naughty but nice"

Also Diz KILLED IT with the bars. Seriously he smashed it..... One the beats i gave him was "Rotate" and he destroyed it with probably the BEST freestyle I've heard this year. Even my producer kept going on about how good it was. Hear for yourself this Sunday night Kiss100

NEWHAM GENERALS FREESTYLE WITH DJMK

8 MINUTE SICK FREESTYLE WITH THE GENERALS....KILLING IT!!

HHC R.I.P

So after 21 years Hip Hop Connection is no more. Lets be honest, it had its good/bad points but for anyone (Andy Cowan) to run a Hip Hop magazine for 21 years deserves props. HHC was 1st a phone service where you'd pay £1.50 a minute to hear all the latest Hip Hop news. A few months later in Aug 1988 the 1st edition hit the streets. Oh yeah and this is before the Source...You gonna miss it??????

In 1988 Hip-Hop Connection (HHC) magazine published its first issue. 21 years later, the world’s longest running rap monthly recently published its last.

It’s a cracker too, answering the question heads over the globe just can’t resist arguing over: Who is the great rapper of all time? And we didn’t just send our top critics down the pub to argue the toss. Rather, we polled over 100 emcees from all walks of life and all levels of superstardom to find the answer.

While there is an inevitable air of sadness that a combination of increased paper and production costs allied to viciously plummeting ad revenues have made continuing unworkable, HHC and its staff are happy the magazine is hanging up its metaphorical boots while in rude creative health.

Independently published by Infamous Ink since 2001, it’s charted hip-hop’s myriad highs and lows in candid and amusing fashion; never cowed by the preening demands of rap’s A-list stars or scared to take them down a peg or too, while also championing the UK’s homegrown hopefuls and the freshest underground US talent. Along the way HHC has posted upfront cover debuts for the likes of The Fugees, Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, Eminem, Danger Mouse, 50 Cent and The Game – long before they were anything close to being on the mainstream’s radar.

And while HHC will no longer be the true rap fanatic’s monthly paper fix, it will still live on in other forms: from April 7 it will become the world’s first dedicated digital hip-hop magazine, available for download from www.hhcdigital.net

All of HHC’s staff and contributors will continue to be active journalistically, so please retain on any relevant mailing lists.

Thank you for your support, in whatever capacity, over the years.

All the best,

Andy Cowan (Hip Hop Connection)

PHAT FRIDAY'S EVIL DEE - HOT 97 1994

Found HERE. Shout out to Paul.

This tape (only 40 mins long unfortunately) is one of my favourites for the following reasons:
- E Rule's 'Listen Up'.
- Evil Dee cutting up Zhane & Blackgirl acapellas over Gang Starr and Wu Tang beats and scratching his name check on 'Crooklyn'.
- Its got the world premier of Black Moon's 'Murder MCs', straight off the DAT from D&D studios.
- Buckshot drops a freestyle over the 'Kaught In Da Ak' instrumental.
- The phoned-in shout-outs give it an authentic mid-90s NYC feel and I like that sort of thing.
Considering this is from 1994 (one of the best years ever for quality Hip Hop) its strange that Buckshot mentions "taking Hip Hop back". He obviously had no idea what the future held and that any DJ playing a Bootcamp Click b-side on daytime Hot 97 in 2009 would be fired.

DJ MK-DIZZEE RASCAL

So today i hooked up with my bredrin Dizzee Rascal at Kiss. He was armed with some gold discs and one of them was for me!! After Diz laced me with the gold, we went into the studio and laid down some SICK freestyles. Seriously, i put on the "Rotate" ins and he destroyed it. One of the best freestyles Ive heard all year real talk. Diz also broke down his new album, whose on it, what vibe it's on, and why its gonna sell more than the last album. Gonna air the interview and spitting session next week. Dont miss it.

DE LA SOULS DUG OUT

Ok here's the deal... I get a phone call at Midnight from Shortee Blitz telling me i HAVE TO CHECK THIS WEBSITE....Basically its some of the sickest thing Ive seen. YouTube is kinda dead now google (who owns YouTube) has taken all the videos off. Anyway, this website is live streaming from what i think is Maceo from De La Souls basement. When i logged on i witnessed DJ Scratch cutting up live for about 30 minutes ....HE MURDERED IT....KILLED IT....DESTROYED IT....Seriously it was amazing....Then after that Maceo came on and djed for 2 hours, just playing every thing from bangers to rare funk to 80's grooves. The good thing is that theres a chat room as well, so you can chat ish and chat to Maceo....Anyway 4 hours later me and half of London was locked in. Then Bumpy Knuckles comes on and killed it, cracking pure jokes...It was mad, talking to Freddie Fox and Shortee blitz, and Harry love at the same time whilst hearing some sick tunes..You have to sign up but its free. Normally i wouldn't post this kinda thing, but its worth checking out...Shout out shortee for the hook up!!
