SOULJA BOY SAY NAS KILLED HIP HOP??????????

Wow. Soulja boy has a go at Nas and says he's the one who killed hip hop??? Soulja boy really needs some education when it comes to our culture and music but if Nas went at Soulja boy would there really be any point??? That would be like a lion having a fight with a Yorkshire terrier.... Or should Nas just slay him????

I respect Soulja Boy for milking it and making himself a millionaire, but that's about as far as it goes. Theres SOooooo many funny quotes in this footage...Let me know what you found they funniest....Mine is....

"Lil Wayne was the 1st person to come out and say he was the greatest rapper alive"

or

"See how George bush f**ked up America, the same way Nas did wit hip hop"

Jay-Z's J Hotel Construction Halted Due To Recession

Hard times in this crazy town...

The recent recession has claimed yet another victim, this time it's Hip Hop mogul Jay-Z and his company J Hotels.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Jay-Z along with partners Abram Shnay, Scott Blaichman, and Charles Blaichman were to build a luxury hotel on a piece of land Jay-Z's company J Hotels purchased in Manhattan's Chelsea area.

Due to the recession, construction on the land has been delayed because of lack of funding. The recession has made it much harder to find funding and borrow loans from the bank.

"Even the banks who want to give us money can't," Charles Blaichman told the New York Times.

J Hotels and developer Charles Blaichman aren't the only ones being hit hard by the recession, $5 billion worth of development projects have either been delayed or canceled.

There is no word yet on how long the project will be delayed.

Aside from the potential Chelsea hotel, Jay-Z also has his New York nightclub 40/40 and a club in Las Vegas' Venetian Hotel which will open on December 30.

Most recently, Jay-Z made headlines when he sold his Rocawear line to Iconix Brand Group for $204 million.

QUEENS GET THE MONEY (UNOFFICIAL VIDEO) RE-UP

Vimeo took down this controversial video which i posted a few days ago, which is now up for the time being on youtube.
Powerful and distrubing watch it from begining to end. It took 8 months to make, and features some film clips that have never really been seen before. Watch it, and let me know what you think...

Freddie Hubbard R.I.P.

ANOTHER LEGEND DIES....

An Amazing muician, sampled by the likes of Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and Cl Smoth, Souls Of Mischief, Black Sheep, Masta Ace etc. Basicly if you ve ever listened to 90's hip hop then you've listened to this man...RIP

Freddie Hubbard died today at Sherman Oaks Hospital as a result of a heart attack suffered in late November. His name might not blow up the same marquee lights as that of the late Eartha Kitt, whom we lost on Christmas Day, but anyone who cultivates even a passing interest in jazz certainly knows Hubbard's swift, mercury-smooth trumpet sound, whether they realize it or not.

A sideman for Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey, Hubbard did some of his most masterful work with the '60s avant-garde crowd, including Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch," John Coltrane's "Ascension" and Ornette Coleman's masterful group improvisation "Free Jazz." Perhaps as a result of such a track record, Hubbard's recordings as a band leader may have been a bit overshadowed, but his soul-jazz leaning '70s work on "Red Clay" and "Straight Life" are well worth investigating.

Nas "Queens Get The Money" (Unofficial) Video

Queens Get The Money Music Video from ENCYCLOPEDIA on Vimeo.

THE 696 FORM

The 696 Form is one of the scariest pieces of legislation which the government are trying to bring in and it will effect ALL OF US.

The 696 Form compels licensees who wish to hold live music events in 21 London Boroughs to report to the police the names, addresses, aliases and telephone numbers of performers, and most worryingly, the likely ethnicity of their audience. Failure to comply could result in fines or imprisonment. We believe this places unnecessary and frankly Orwellian powers in the hands of the Metropolitan Police, an institution which does not have the best record of racial fairness. The 696 form can only serve to deter the staging of live musical events - a positive form of activity in London and all cities - stifle free expression and quite possible penalise certain genres of music and ethnic audiences. It is an intrusion too far."

Last month i was djing at a certin West End spot and the promoter asked me for a lot of my own personal details amoungst other things. I refused and nothing else happened. If your interested, please sign the petition below, and let me know your thoughts... shout out to Barclay.

Exclusive: Giggs Vs MTV Base and 1Xtra – The Last Straw Video Interview

Ment to post this like 2 weeks ago....

Britain's most controversial rapper has spoken exclusively to Overgroundonline about his beef with BBC 1Xtra and MTV Base.

2008 BET Hip-Hop Award winner Giggs sent shockwaves through the urban entertainment industry after releasing a diss-video accusing bosses at both stations of trying to sabotage his career.

The Last Straw has received over 25,000 views since being posted on YouTube two weeks ago and confirms Giggs' status as this year's hottest underground rapper.

The south London MC's debut album, Walk in the Park, sold more than 20,000 copies in three months and his Myspace page has received over one million hits this year.

But despite his popularity, Giggs, 27, claims his music has been blacklisted by MTV Base head Jasmine Dotiwala and 1Xtra executive producer and events manager Ray Paul.

He says: 'Ray and Jas have been mucking me about, trying to blackball everything I'm doing.'

Both broadcasters deny the allegations.

Dotiwala told Overgroundonline: 'I don’t make playlist decisions. MTV Base has a playlist team who's job it is to work with the industry and champion acts.

'If Giggs were to acknowledge this and work with us in delivering appropriate video material, he'd be a bigger success and get ahead a lot quicker.

'I met with Giggs and told him I'd heard a wide variety of people saying things about him and wanted to explain that whilst he had a great buzz and following, MTV Base couldn't air a video with violent lyrics and visuals during editorial programming.

'He said he understood. I also have email exchanges where his team promised to send in a clean version of his video. Next thing, he's convinced everyone's blackballing him.

'Giggs has a controversial reputation that many are aware of. He reassured me that he's no longer involved in a criminal lifestyle.

'I told him if we were to consider an editorial feature in The Lick, aside from a clean video, he'd need to put his story to rest, as MTV Base cannot be seen to support someone that still has a questionable reputation on the street.

'I also said that I'd been volatile in my youth, but saw the bigger picture: you have to play the game in order to get anywhere.

'I reached out to him because I thought he had potential. I've told others in the music industry that we should give him a break, as artists like Jay Z were given similar breaks in order to turn their lives around.

'I’m genuinely disappointed he's chosen to believe what he does, and wish him well in his endeavours.'

On 28 November 2008, a BBC spokesperson told Overgroundonline:

'The claims have no basis in fact and 1Xtra is disappointed that [Giggs] has made them. 1Xtra selects tracks to play on merit and has played tracks by this artist in the last 10 days.

'The fact that the artist had won the BET award was reflected to listeners with a special broadcast from Atlanta.'

BLACK THOUGHT SAYS GOOD BYE TO THE KNITTING FACTORY

The Knitting Factory was one of the best Hip hop venues in NYC and im gutted to hear that its closing its doors. Situated right in the middle of Manhatten, the Knitting factory was a kool venue where you could see some one like Busta or a more underground hip hop artist such as Ill Bill.

I was lucky enough to play this venue twice, once in 1999, and then in 2005 alongside Roots Manuva (who was the 1st uk mc to ever play there)

Theres hardly any venues left in NYC to see good live hip hop.......Big pitty

WILEY - OXFORD STREET FREESTYLE - PRODUCED BY LEWI WHITE

NEW HEAT FROM WILEY...Yo Lewi White is one of my favorite producers in the UK. He's one of the few beat makers in this country who can make grime and Hip Hop. He killed it last year with Smashers "Back in the day" and has been busy in the lab cooking up heat, and looks to take over in 2009.

Check out this track he did with Wiley. He killed it on the beat, and this is Wiley back on top form. Lyrically i ain't been to impressed with Wiley of late, but he goes in HARD on this one, with some sick positive lyrics.

DJ MK @ THE MASTERING SESSION OF THE NEW NEWHAM GENERALS ALBUM "GENERALLY SPEAKING"

So today i was invited down to the mastering session of the brand new Newham Generals album "Generally Speaking"
I ve heard bits and pieces of this album since April when Dizz and Cage played me some ruff versions of it, and on the real i was blown away by what i heard, so i was excited to hear the finished result.

When i got to the studio The Generals, Dizz and Cage were chilling listening to "Head Get Mangled" being mastered. This track is incredible. It's too much. Bass heavy to the extreme, and I'd say one of my favorite cuts on the album (Shout out to cAGE on the beat who killed it)

I got played a world exclusive of the video for "Head Get Mangled" which is SICK. Imagine Jacobs Ladder, Torture, and a room full of kinky ladies. I'll say no more, you really just have to watch it. It's in a class by itself and it takes it to a whole other level (Shout out to Rachel)

Generally Speaking is 13 cuts long and lyrically Footsie and D Double kill it. The good thing about this album is that its dirty and grimy as hell but at the same time its next level and will appeal to indie/rock kids and hip hop heads, as well as the grime scene, which is what we need more of musically in this country.

Yo rather then me go on about the album, listen to the Generals break down their album themselves. Listen below

Shout out to Santa who was in the house and sorted me out with the free sunglasses which you see me pictured in below...Anything BASS heavy got rinsed down there and the biggest tunes of the night were Kyza's "Judgement day" and the "Tear up Jeans riddim which is HUGE....Get to know.

JAZZY JEFF - LIVE AT UNION SQUARE-FULL 20 MINUTE SET!!!!!

Back in the day Jazzy Jeff and The fresh prince were dope and took the rap world by storm. By 1988 they released there 2ND and best album "He's the DJ, I'm the rapper which was a smash and featured the legendary "Live at union Square"

Now if you were a DJ, this was the best track on the album...basically it was a live set recorded at the legendary NYC venue Union square, where Jazzy Jeff was showing off his DJ skills cutting up Apache, and Dance to the drummers beat , and he KILLLLLED IT. Even listening to it now, it sounds crazy and Jazzy Jeff's skills are impeccable. This track alone influenced EVERY Hip hop DJ that you listen to now. When i was a kid at school i used to rewind this tape over and over and over again trying to work out exactly what he was doing and how he did it. Remember this was before the Internet, and satellite TV, so there was no video footage of what Jazzy Jeff was actually doing.

OK so the track "Live at union square" is only a few minutes long, but below is the full 20 minute set, which has even MORE cutting up by the god Jazzy Jeff. It was aired back in 88 on Mr magic s"Rap attack show" This is essential listening if your a DJ. Check out Jazzy Jeff DESTROYING IT!!!!!

LIVE AT UNION SQUARE FULL SET

What i respected about The Fresh Prince aka Will Smith, was that he was the 1st commerical rapper, with hits like "Girls of the world aint nothing but trouble" but would balance it out with tracks like below...

DJ MK- NO MORE TOUR

So after 42 gigs in 13 different countries in 60 days, im happy to say im finally home!!!! The Roots Manuva "Slime and reason" European tour was crazy and all the shows were dope and ram, but its so good to be home. I aint gonna lie,by the last 2 gigs we were all going crazy with the lack of sleep, but its all good.

Props to Roots Manuva tho, apart from an artist Like Dizzee, theres not many UK Mc's who could pull off a 24 date European tour in Big venues, and have all these venues RAM!!! Having a world wide fan base is essential. Up and coming MC'S need to look more to europe and beyond to sell there music and build a fan base. Having a name in london is a good look, but to able to get a gig and have a fan base ANYWHERE in the world is HUGE.

Check out the random tour pix from below, and shout outs to everyone over the last 6 weeks who came out to the shows..

CHARLIE SLOTH - RUSH THE DJ

This is a sick new video from UK MC Charlie Sloth. Charlie 1st made some noise when he did his UK version of Nas " Cant forget about".

This track is a tongue in cheek dig at alot of the UK Djs who dont play his records.Westwood, myself, Semtex,279 and many more all get cussed but its all good. The funny thing is, is that i ve only ever been sent one track from this guy in my life. And i played it. And i even had him up on my show. If artists want to get there music played, and if its good, its pretty simple, just email it....emm_kay@hotmail.com.

Charlie also mentions something like, if he had his hat turned back, and wore a backpack he'd have more of a change of getting his stuff played on my show. Backpack?? Bruv if that's what you think i play then you obviously don't listen to my show. That said Charlies a decent MC and this is one of the most creative videos Ive seen all year.

DJ MK-LIVE ON CHOICE FM WITH DJ 279 - SEPT 1997

Some more archieve business for you. I always wanted to get into Radio and as you can imagine if your a up and coming DJ this is easier said then done. I figuerd that if i couldnt get my own show then i could do mixes for the guys who already had shows.

DJ 279 was always mad kool, and used to let me pas up to Choice Fm and do some guest mixs for him. What i used to like about 279 was his honesty, and when i would do him a mix he'd make it very clear that the mix had to be PERFECT!!!

Looking back, he was just trying to push everyone to be the best they could, and id spend DAYS doing one 20 minute mix.

The mix below came out real nice and unless you listened into Choice on that day back in 1997 you've probably never heard it before. Its also the 1st time skinny man is played on vinyl. I remember earlier that day i was working in Deal Real and Tony Vegas got given a white label to The Mud Files EP.He thought id make more use of it so he gave it to me and i played it that night on choice...

DJ MK-MIX MASTERS WEEKEND -1996-RADIO 1 RAP SHOW WITH TIM WESTWOOD

OK, lets take it back to 96 with my first ever appearance on Radio 1. Westwood used to do this feature called mix masters weekend which originally aired on hot97 in NYC. This was the 1st mix masters weekend and alongside a young Shortee Blitz, DJ Bizzness, DJ Marvin, and DJ Paris we took over the airwaves of Radio 1.

I remember being really pissed off at the time as the decks at Radio1 were messed up and one side was louder than the other for the 1st bit of the mix.

Regardless the mix came out dope, and i had fun down there. Shout out to big Tim for putting me on back in the day...

GULLYVER LAST SATURDAY NIGHT @PLATIC PEOPLE WITH DJ MK & A-CYDE

So last Saturday was the last gullyver session at plastic people in East London. Back in 2002 me and A-cyde both djed at spot in islington and we both said to each other"lets just play exactly what we want" That night we just played sick music.... Hip Hop,Soul,Bashment, even some 80's Pop. The result was amazing and this was before dj's really played "eclectic" sets. This gave us the idea to do a club night like that on the regs... 2 years later GULLYVER was born.

The party last Saturday was easily one of the best parties in London full stop. I think what makes the club so good is that its all about the music and the vibes there is so good. Look out for the "DAD HOUR" Podcast, which me and A-cyde will be recording next week.

Shout out to everyone who came down to the nite....At 2am we locked the doors, stopped letting people in (as we were capacity) and went on till 5am!!!! Shout out to Fats and Coco Black on the snap snap...Big up to Roxy for the suprise dj set too...Look out for the GULLYVER special in New York early next year.

Check the pix below....Have a look at the dude with the grey beard...He was over 70 years old and Raving HARD!!! Props to him and everyone else that made it down there...Until Feb..
